How to Make CannaOil
Think of all the ways you use oils in your cooking - from pastas to proteins, sauces to salads to stir-frys, we use oil in SO MANY recipes! Luckily for us, THC is highly fat soluble so oil is the perfect medium for infusing literally hundreds of dishes!
What you need:
Stockpot or large saucepan
2 mason jars
Cheesecloth or coffee filter
Oven mitt
A strainer
Kitchen tongs
1 cup of oil (more on that below)
3.5g of decarbed cannabis
Any cooking oil will readily absorb the THC molecules in this process, so the choice of oil is totally up to you. It depends on your intent with the oil - canola oil is great for general cooking, olive oil is great for drizzling over salads, peanut oil works great, and even coconut oil (you have to soften coconut oil first because it’s solid at room temp).
We always need to talk about dosing in our recipes. There’s a ton of variability so this isn’t an exact science. An eighth (3.5g) of decarbed flower at 20% potency yields approximately 550mg of THC in the oil after the decarb process and infusion - approximately 10mg per 1-teaspoon serving.
Here’s how we do it:
- Fill the mason jar with the decarbed cannabis and the oil, close the lid and give it a shake
- Place the jar in the pot and fill the pot with enough water to cover the jar up to the lid
- Set the stovetop on medium-high heat to start, reducing it to low-medium before it boils
- Let the cannacream simmer in the hot water bath for about two hours, adding water as it steams off
- Approximately halfway through simmering, pull the jar out with the tongs and slightly open the seal (using oven mitts) to relieve built-up pressure
- After the two hours are over, remove the jar from the water again and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Line the strainer with the cheesecloth or a coffee filter and place it over the second mason jar. Strain the warm, liquid creamer through the filter to remove the plant matter. Discard the filter and flower remnants.
That’s all there is to it! Let us know which recipe you’re using your CannaOil in!
