Current Marijuana Legislation in the Florida Legislature - 2023

There are a number of marijuana-related bills currently being considered by the Florida legislature. These bills range from proposals to legalize marijuana for recreational use to measures to expand the state's medical marijuana program.  This is meant to be an introduction to the bills I’ve found as of the time of publication that a.  I do a deeper-dive into each bill in its own post - click the links to read more about each bill. 

SB 1576: Legalization of Recreational Marijuana

SB 1576 is a bill that would legalize marijuana for recreational use in Florida. The bill would allow adults 21 and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and grow up to six plants per household. The bill would also create a state-regulated marijuana market.

SB 972: Protections for Public Employees Who Use Medical Marijuana

SB 972 is a bill that would protect public employees who use medical marijuana in Florida. The bill would prohibit employers from discriminating against employees who use medical marijuana off-duty. The bill would also require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees who use medical marijuana.

HB 387: Expansion of Medical Marijuana Program

HB 387 is a bill that would expand the state's medical marijuana program in Florida. The bill would add new qualifying conditions for medical marijuana, such as chronic pain and anxiety. The bill would also allow patients to smoke medical marijuana.

HB 1475/SB 1676: Hemp

This bill would regulate the sale of hemp-derived CBD products.

Others

HB 493/SB 548/SB 1356 all dealt with the licensing of Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers in Florida and all died in committee.

SB 1658: Not yet titled

This bill would create a task force to study the issue of marijuana legalization in Florida.

Call to Action

It is important for us all to stay informed on the current legislation.  It’s equally important for us each to get involved as much as we’re comfortable with.  Here’s a few things you can do:
